ANTI-CANCER DRUGS LARGELY IGNORED

November 16th, 2009 · No Comments

cancer-cell

Even though the National Cancer Institute confirmed that an inexpensive, generic drug called finasteride can prevent as many as 50,000 cases of prostate cancer each year, the drug is largely ignored.  What makes that even more amazing is that finasteride only costs about $2 a day.

The story, which appeared in the New York Times, goes on to say that much of the resources used to fight cancer are aimed at treatment rather than prevention even though there are several examples of drugs that are proven effective in preventing cancer in the first place.

Is this because people are in denial about getting cancer?  Or is “preventing” cancer just not part of our national health psyche?

Check out the four things that have proven effective in preventing cancer and seven things that do not.

(Source: American Psychiatric Association. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) 2000 Washington, DC.)

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you’ve experienced firsthand some of the possible symptoms of a panic or anxiety attack. If you are reading this page because a loved one suffers from these symptoms and you are trying to understand or help, it’s hard to appreciate what they go through.

Just try to imagine what it feels like to experience one, if you can.

Here is a typical example:

anti-stress tabsStanding in a supermarket queue, it’s been a long wait but only one customer to go before you make it to the cashier. Wait, what was that sensation? An unpleasant feeling forms in your throat, your chest feels tighter, now a sudden shortness of breath, and what do you know, your heart skips a beat. “Please, God, not here.”

A quick scan of the territory – is it threatening? Four unfriendly faces queue behind, one person in front. Pins and needles seem to prick you through your left arm, you feel slightly dizzy, and then the explosion of fear as you dread the worst. You are about to have a panic attack.

There is no doubt in your mind now that this is going to be a big one. Okay, focus: Remember what you have been taught, and it is time now to apply the coping techniques. Begin the deep breathing exercise your doctor recommended. In through the nose, out through the mouth.

Think relaxing thoughts, and again, while breathing in, think “Relax,” and then breathe out. But it doesn’t seem to be having any positive effect; in fact, just concentrating on breathing is making you feel self-conscious and more uptight.

Okay, coping technique 2:

Gradual muscle relaxation. Tense both shoulders, hold for 10 seconds, then release. Try it again. No; still no difference. The anxiety is getting worse and the very fact that you are out of coping techniques worsens your panic. If only you were surrounded by your family, or a close friend were beside you so you could feel more confident in dealing with this situation.

Now, the adrenaline is really pumping through your system, your body is tingling with uncomfortable sensations, and now the dreaded feeling of losing complete control engulfs your emotions. No one around you has any idea of the sheer terror you are experiencing. For them, it’s just a regular day and another frustratingly slow queue in the supermarket.

You are out of options. Time for Plan C.

The most basic coping skill of all is “fleeing.” Excuse yourself from the queue; you are slightly embarrassed as it is now that it is your turn to pay. The cashier is looking bewildered as you leave your shopping behind and stroll towards the door. There is no time for excuses – you need to be alone. You leave the supermarket and get into your car to ride it out alone. Could this be the big one? The one you fear will push you over the edge mentally and physically. Ten minutes later the panic subsides.

It’s 10:30 a.m.  How are you going to make it through the rest of the day?

If you suffer from panic or anxiety attacks, the above scenerio probably sounds very familiar. It may have even induced feelings of anxiety and panic just reading it. The particular situations that trigger your panic and anxiety may differ; maybe the bodily sensations are a little different. Or maybe it happened to you for the first time on a plane, in the dentist chair, or even at home, while doing nothing in particular.

If you have ever had what has become known as a “panic attack,” take comfort in the fact that you are by no means alone.

A panic attack always comes with the acute sense of impending doom. You feel you are either about to lose your mind or one of your vital bodily functions is about to cease functioning and you will end your days right there among the canned goods and frozen food.

You are by no means alone; you’re not even one in a million. In America, it is estimated that almost 5% of the population suffer from some form of anxiety disorder. For some, it may be the infrequent panic attacks that only crop up in particular situations-like when having to speak in front of others, while, for other people, it can be so frequent and recurring that it inhibits them from leaving their home. Frequent panic attacks often develop into what medical physicians refer to as an “anxiety disorder.”

One of the first steps to regaining control of your life is getting helpful information. This site will give you that, and more.

The beginning of your recovery starts here. What you will learn is that there is a very good chance you are about to end the cycle of panic attacks in your life. You will learn not only to regain the carefree life you remember once having, but will also gain new confidence in living. Your answer to living free from “panic” or “anxiety attacks” is at hand.

This site demonstrates that the panic and anxiety that you have experienced will be the very key to your courage and success.

Begin the road to recovery by browsing through the site. While many of you may have read almost everything you can possibly read relating to panic and anxiety I assure you this site offers something very effective.

Did you know?

The key difference between someone who is cured of panic attacks and those who are not is really very simple. The people who are cured no longer fear panic attacks. I’ll try to show you how to be one of these people as well.

What if I told you the trick to ending panic and anxiety attacks is to want to have one. That sounds strange, even contradictory, but let me explain.

The trick to panic attacks is wanting to have one-the wanting pushes it away. Can you have a panic attack in this very second? No!

You know the saying that “what you resist, persists.” Well that saying applies perfectly to fear. If you resist a situation out of fear, the fear around that issue will persist. How do you stop resisting – you move directly into it, into the path of the anxiety, and by doing so it cannot persist.

In essence what this means is that if you daily voluntarily seek to have a panic attack, you cannot have one. Try in this very moment to have a panic attack and I will guarantee you cannot. You may not realize it but you have always decided to panic. You make the choice by saying this is beyond my control.

Another way to appreciate this is to imagine having a panic attack as like standing on a cliff’s edge. The anxiety seemingly pushes you closer to falling over the edge.

To be rid of the fear you must metaphorically jump. You must jump off the cliff edge and into the anxiety and fear and all the things that you fear most.

How do you jump? You jump by wanting to have a panic attack. You go about your day asking for anxiety and panic attacks to appear.

Your real safety is the fact that a panic attack will never harm you. That is medical fact. You are safe, the sensations are wild but no harm will come to you. Your heart is racing but no harm will come to you. The jump becomes nothing more than a two foot drop! Perfectly safe.

ELASTIC WEIGHT TRAINING

September 19th, 2009 · No Comments

elastic resistance training

Elastic weight training, or elastic resistance training, involves using elastic bands to create resistance instead of relying solely on weights and gravity.

In addition to the similarities that elastic resistance shares with free-weight resistance, there are several benefits that elastic resistance offers that free-weight resistance does not.

bodylastic2

One of the most important benefits of elastic resistance is that, unlike free weights, it does not rely on gravity to provide resistance. This increases its potential for use in more functional movement patterns that mimic both everyday activities and sport-specific activities.

Because free weights rely on gravity to provide resistance, they can only provide resistance in a vertical plane — the direction of gravity. This means that if you do an exercise with a free weight in the horizontal plane, such as moving your left hand (while holding a dumbbell) from the left side of your body to the right side of your body, there is no resistance to that movement.

With elastic tubing, on the other hand, you can have resistance when doing exercises in a horizontal plane. This means you can perform exercises such as twisting your body from side to side, side kicks and punches, as well as movements that mimic a baseball swing or basketball pass with elastic resistance.

Performing exercises with resistance in a horizontal plane better prepares the individual for performing daily tasks — such as turning his body while carrying a heavy box — much easier and with less risk for injury. It also better prepares athletes for competitive movements that take place in a horizontal plane, such as swinging a baseball bat, and helps to prevent sports injuries.

A study published in a 1998 issue of American Journal of Sports Medicine, reported that collegiate tennis players who trained using elastic bands increased their shoulder strength and the speed of their tennis serve. Another study, from Louisiana State University (New Orleans), discovered that an elastic band training program strengthened the rotator cuff muscles of collegiate baseball pitchers better than a program that used free-weight dumbbells.

Because elastic resistance does not rely on gravity to provide resistance, it is possible to change the emphasis placed on muscles during certain exercises. This is made possible by changing the direction of pull of the elastic tubing or bands.

For example, research from Brigham Young University reported that it was possible to change the emphasis placed on the quadriceps and hamstrings during squatting or stepping exercises by changing the direction of pull of the elastic tubing.

The ability to change muscle emphasis is important for those who want to target specific muscles either for aesthetic reasons or for strengthening for sport competition. It is also important for those with injuries, as shifting the force more to certain muscles can help protect certain associated joints. For example, greater hamstring emphasis during squatting or stepping exercises helps to protect certain structures around the knee. This is difficult to accomplish with free weights because, as previously stated, they require the direction of force to be vertical, due to the reliance on gravity for resistance.

Another benefit provided by the fact that elastic resistance does not rely on gravity is that it provides continuous tension to the muscles being trained. When you lift a free weight like a dumbbell in any direction other than straight up and down, the tension on the muscle can actually be removed at certain points in the range of motion. For example, when doing a biceps curl with a dumbbell, as you curl the dumbbell up towards the shoulder, at the very top of the movement the dumbbell is literally falling towards the shoulder. This means that the tension on the biceps has been removed because the dumbbell is no longer being lifted up against gravity by the biceps. When doing a biceps curl with elastic resistance, the tension is present throughout the entire range of motion because the elastic material provides resistance due to its own properties.

The fact that elastic resistance equipment does not rely on gravity also means that the elastic resistance equipment used can be inexpensive, lightweight and easily stored and transported despite its ability to provide strong resistance11. On the contrary, free weights must be heavy and cumbersome to provide strong resistance. In addition, free weights tend to be expensive as they are typically priced by the pound.

Common Peanut Allergies Can Cause Fatal Reaction

July 24th, 2009 · No Comments

peanut allergies?People suffering from peanut allergies need to be extremely careful about anything they eat as many items made from peanut shells and oil can trigger as bad a reaction as experienced by eating actual peanuts. Many times people with peanut allergies do not understand that anything made from peanuts, even without the whole peanut being present can trigger a reaction, which could develop into anaphylactic seizure and death, depending on the degree of allergic reaction.

When most people of peanut allergies they think of the typical peanut, which in reality are legumes and many people with peanut allergies are also allergic to peas and beans, members of the same family. They are probably also allergic to nuts that grow on trees such as almonds, pecans and cashews. Some of the indications of peanut allergies include a tightness in the throat, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting. While many people have developed an allergy to nuts, it is fairly common in children and more children are developing the allergy than they have in the past.

Contrary to popular belief, it is very rare for a person to outgrow an allergy. In some cases, a person may have been misdiagnosed as having peanut allergies and years later it is determined their immune system can, in fact tolerate its ingestion. An allergic reaction occurs when the body’s immune system sees a nut as a dangerous object and mobilizes its defenses to fight it off.

Nuts Often Hidden In Foods

Peanuts are a widely used food product and can show up in places many people would never expect them to be found. While peanut butter is an obvious source of peanuts and is taboo for those with peanut allergies, many may not realize that crushed nuts are often used in sauces and in Asian foods such as pad thai. Additionally, an Italian sauce called Pesto is made from crushed nuts.

Many health food and energy bars contain nuts as do bouillon and some sauces. When a person has been diagnosed as having nut or peanut allergies it can be a life-saving decision to stay away from all foods containing them. Even if not listed in the ingredients, persons with a high susceptibility to peanut allergies can suffer an attack with even a trace amount in the product.

Many of the fruit flavored cereals also contain nuts as do many candy bars and salty snacks. Potato chips can also be fried in peanut oil, which can cause and attack of peanut allergies in just about everyone.

Here’s more info to determine if your allergies are caused by a low immune system.

FDA Panel Votes To Restrict Acetaminophen

Health hazard? An advisory committee to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted on Tuesday to recommend new restrictions on the popular pain relief drug acetaminophen (known in many other countries as paracetamol), which is found in many US top selling over the counter medications such as Tylenol, aspirin-free Anacin, Excedrin, and also in prescription drugs such as Vicodin and Percocet.

The FDA does not have to follow the recommendation of its advisory committees, but it usually does.

Altogether, the committee voted on 10 ways to restrict use of acetaminophen, including reducing the single adult dose and reducing the maximum daily dose of over the counter acetaminophen.

How General Hospitals Are Expanding To Meet Growing Population Demands

June 20th, 2009 · No Comments

hospitals expanding to meet growing demandAs communities grow, so do the health systems that service them. Many general hospitals now offer patients a multitude of medical services from one convenient location. These comprehensive medical centers ensure the diverse needs of patients are met by providing the highest quality care possible using state-of-the-art technologies.

Home Health

In addition to surgical services, in-patient facilities, and 24-hour emergency room care, many hospitals provide patients with specialized services including home health, heart centers, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.

General hospitals understand that patients are more likely to feel at ease and are more likely to heal faster from the privacy and comfort of their own home. When patients are homebound or just need to make the transition from a hospital stay to home, an in-home treatment plan can be a viable option.

Medical centers provide licensed, trained professionals in many areas including nursing, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and nutrition. Home health treatment plans can include anything from post-operative care and rehabilitation to wound care and disease management.

Heart Center

Because heart disease is America’s number one killer, a lot of hospitals have state-of-the-art heart centers to not only respond to and treat heart attacks and strokes, but to also help patients prevent them through education, regular screenings, and accurate diagnoses.

Another unique feature of a hospital’s heart center is having dedicated cardiac teams on standby to aid patients needing critical care who have bypassed the emergency room. Cutting-edge ICE programs are also part of some of the more advanced medical centers. This is where the body temperature is cooled for 24-36 hours following a cardiac arrest; the body’s temperature is then slowly raised back to normal. This technology has been shown to increase survival rates above the national average. Finally, comprehensive general hospitals use their heart centers to promote community outreach and women’s heart programs.

Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

Following a hospital stay due to a cardiac attack or pulmonary disease, patients recover faster when they participate in a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program. Patients who benefit from rehabilitation include those who have had coronary stent replacements, heart transplants, bypass surgeries, or those who have experienced a heart attack.

Doctor refers patients to cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and staff members work closely with the doctors to evaluate the patient’s progress. Patients undergoing rehabilitation are monitored closely during prescribed exercises on therapeutic equipment. Heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are all monitored.

An equally important aspect of the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation is the emphasis that is placed on heart and health education following a patient’s discharge and completion of rehabilitation. This ensures patients adopt healthy habits and can continue their recovery process at home while preventing future problems.

General hospitals understand the importance of providing quality health care to their diverse and ever-growing communities. Comprehensive medical centers allow patients to receive the individual care they need from a family of quality health care professionals dedicated to serving their growing community.

Dakota Bressler writes for the Citrus Memorial Health System, a premier Inverness medical center. This comprehensive medical center is a top Florida general hospital.
